Costa Rica faces health catastrophe

Posted 26/04/2021

Costa Rica is on the verge of the worst health catastrophe in its history due to Covid-19, said Mario Ruiz, medical manager of the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS), in charge of public health on Saturday, April 24 when the highest number of daily infections of Covid-19 was registered with a total of 1,830. The youngest person to date was also hospitalized: a 19-year-old woman.

In an extraordinary press conference, held virtually and with the presence of the President of the Republic, Carlos Alvarado, the medical manager of the CCSS said that all medical centers in the country are on alert.

This is because the number of people who need to be hospitalized for Covid-19 continues to increase, to the point of being very close to saturating the intensive care units (ICU), in which there are 303 patients as of Saturday.

The maximum number of beds available in the ICU is 359, and out of every 5 people hospitalized for Covid-19, two have required intensive care.

Faced with this reality, Ruiz asked the population to avoid the collapse of the Costa Rican health system, increase biosecurity measures, as well as avoid leaving home unless strictly necessary.

President Alvarado joined the request. "We are facing a situation that calls us to redouble protection measures to contain between all and all the curve of cases that continues to grow," said the president.

After Holy Week, when the country registered an average of 400 daily cases, the cases tripled in less than three weeks, Ruiz explained.

Given this accelerated increase in a sustained way, it is materially impossible to meet the demand for severe covid patients and other pathologies that also compromise people's lives, he added.

Since the first patient hospitalized for Covid-19 in the country, critical moments have been experienced, Ruiz said. The first was in September 2020 (627 patients), the second in December 2020 (644 patients), and this week 662 hospitalizations were registered, projecting to be the most critical of all the moments experienced to date.

Costa Rica Applies New Mobility Restrictions

In order to reduce the effects of the pandemic that caused the outbreak of Covid-19, from April 27 to May 16, there will be restrictions on vehicle traffic from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. the following day.

Monday, April 26, 2021

Given the speed of the increase in the number of infections and hospital occupancy, some of the most severe epidemiological data since the beginning of the pandemic, the health authorities made the decision to change the restriction schedule, according to an official statement.

The authorities explained that this action seeks to reduce the mobility of the population, slowing down the increase of contagions without closing establishments, the document highlights.

Costa Rican President, Carlos Alvarado explained that the country is "... facing a situation that requires us to redouble our protection measures to contain the curve of cases that continues growing. We continue with the vaccination campaign, which strengthens the actions we are carrying out in the face of Covid-19. In spite of this, we must be careful and not let our guard down to avoid a collapse in hospitalization, which is at its limit today."

Only from April 16 to April 24, 1464 incidents have been attended throughout the national territory, related to the pandemic such as crowds on public roads, stores, temples of worship, private property, among others, specifies the presidential statement.

On Wednesday, April 28, the record of Covid-19 infections in Costa Rica was broken again with 2,434 new cases, the highest number in the 14 months of the pandemic, said Health authorities.

This figure represents 507 more cases than on Tuesday when 1,927 infections were registered.

There are 40,184 active cases according to the epidemiological report of the Ministry of Health.

Sixteen deaths in 24 hours brought the total to 3,202. The hospitals of the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) are operating at maximum capacity, with 818 patients (351 in ICU).

People have to wait up to more than 12 hours to get a space in the hospitals, an institution that has already begun to set up field hospitals and negotiate contracts with four private medical centers to care for non-covid patients.

Beds become available from patients who die.
