Fewer cars, more room for speeding

In spite of the January, lockdown with fewer vehicles on the road speeding topped the list of tickets handed out by traffic cops.

The Directorate of Traffic Operations of the National Police reported that 35,107 fines  were imposed for various infractions, with speeding being the biggest offense with 12,322

In addition, 1,580 were recorded for inadequate lights, 530 for talking while driving, 440 for drunkenness, 66 for alcoholic breath and 50 drivers had an expired license.

According to the statistics of the Traffic  Directorate, in 2020, 603,474 sanctions were imposed, of which 220 ,897 were speeding.

In operations to prevent the spread of Covid-19, the Police reported that in January 2021, a total of 8,014 people were brought before a justice of the peace for failing to comply with the established curfew.
