Isla Boná Island which was once threatened by a group planning to develop an oil facility is now a protected area and a refuge for wildlife following the signing on Thursday, December 5 of a resolution that makes it the Isla Boná Wildlife Refuge.

The resolution signed at the Biomuseo, on the Amador Causeway by Minister of Environment, Milciades Concepción, also establishes protection for Estivá Island, which constitute an important habitat for bird species.

The islands of Boná and Estivá, located in the Gulf of Panama, are used by several bird species to nest.

The protected area covers an area of 92.63 hectares.the marine area covers 3,885 square kilometers.

Before the signing of the resolution, Boná Island, which is considered an area for whale and dolphin watching, lacked legal protection.
