Panama is one of 11  countries, including Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic,  and Ecuador that and Panama, will benefit from the medical assistance mission to be carried out by a US Navy hospital ship. to respond to the effects of the humanitarian crisis in Venezuela says the US Southern Command.

The USNS Comfort doctors will also provide services on board or at local medical institutions in Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, Saint Kitts, and Nevis and Trinidad and Tobago.

"This deployment responds directly to the crisis provoked by the Maduro regime,” said Admiral Craig Faller, head of the US Southern Command, in a statement released ThursdayMay 23.

It will be developed for five months and has not yet said the exact date of departure of the Comfort, which is based in Norfolk (Virginia), although it will be in the middle of June.

"The Comfort medical teams will work together with the medical professionals of the host nations who have absorbed thousands of Venezuelan migrants and refugees," Fuller said.

This is the seventh deployment of the Comfort since 2007.

The previous mission took place between October and December 2018 in Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, and Honduras, lasted 11 weeks and helped more than 26,700 patients.

US Hospial Ship visits Panama

The U.S. Navy USNS Comfort hospital ship is on its fourth visit to Panama, as part of a five-month medical assistance mission to support countries in the region that respond to the Venezuelan humanitarian crisis.

The Ministry of Health (MINSA) coordinates the medical mission with the participation of local medical professionals, governmental organizations, NGOs, educational institutions and volunteers. The hospital ship will perform around 120 surgeries onboard, to patients preselected by the Ministry of Health, and will attend 500 patients per day in two care centers in Colón from August 7 to 12 where they will provide general medical services, dental and optometry. The mainland care centers will be located in the Regional University Center of the city of Colón and in the Dr. Augusto Samuel Boyd School in Buena Vista, Colón.

In addition to Panama, this year's USNS Comfort deployment includes stops in Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Grenada, Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Jamaica, Peru and Saint Lucia.

US hospital ship aids over 3,500 Panamanians

The US Comfort mission, which began on Wednesday in Colon had assisted a total of 3,500 Panamanian patients, in the centers of Nuevo San Juan and the Regional University Center. by Friday night while 48 people received outpatient operations on the hospital ship in the port of Cristóbal. The numbers were expected to increase over the weekend. The ship, has 1,000 crew members, half of whom are military doctors.
