Bottled water: The Business in Panama

In the first quarter of the year imports of bottled water by companies in Panama totaled $3 million, and 70% was imported from the US and France.

Variation of imports  
Between the first three months of 2017 and the same period in 2018 the import value of bottled water registered a drop of 7%, decreasing from $3 million to $2.8 million. 

For the periods in question, the value imported from the USA reported a decline of 17%, going from $2 million to $1.7 million, and from France it grew by 21%, rising from $200,000 to $300,000.

Origin of imports 
During the first quarter of 2018, 61% of the value imported from Panama came from the USA, 14% from the Panama Free Zone, 10% from France, 6% from Costa Rica and 6% from Italy. 

France is the market of origin of imports that has grown the most in the first quarter of the last seven years. In 2012 no imports were registered, but this year imports reached 10% of the total value.

Panamanian companies, main buyers
In 2018, the main importer of bottled water in Central America was Panama, with $11 million, followed by El Salvador, with $4 million. Costa Rica, with $3 million, and Honduras, Guatemala and Nicaragua reported purchases of close to two million dollars each.

Variation in regional business
Between 2017 and 2018, the value of bottled water imported into Central America did not change significantly.

Main U.S. seller
In 2018, 56% of the value imported into the region was from the U.S., 7% from Italy, 7% from France, 2% from Mexico and 1% from Spain.

The U.S. is the market origin of imports that has grown the most in the last seven years, since in 2012 represented 33% of total purchases in Central America and in 2018 that proportion rose to 56%.

Panamanian Companies, Top Buyers
In the first nine months of last year the main importer of bottled water in Central America was Panama with $8 million, followed by El Salvador with $2.9 million, Costa Rica with $2.4 million, Guatemala with $2 million, Honduras with $1.8 million and Nicaragua with $1.2 million.

Variation of Regional Business
Between January and September 2018 and the same period in 2019, the value of bottled water imports into Central America increased 4%, from $17.5 million to $18.2 million.

For the periods in question, Central American purchases from U.S. companies grew from $9.3 million to $10.6 million.

U.S. Main Seller
In the first nine months of the year, 58% of the value imported into the region came from the USA, 7% from Italy, 7% from France, 2% from Mexico and 2% from Spain.

The US is the market of origin of the imports that has grown the most for the period in question over the last eight years, since in 2012 it represented 32% of total Central American purchases and in 2019 that proportion rose to 58%.
