  5. For those of you using the online system for Social Security to check on your payment dates and other information you should have received an email today telling you that you will be required to have a text/data cell phone (smart phone) that SS can send you a text message on to be able to log into the system as of tomorrow. I have called to check if they have my Panama cell phone number and whether they will be able to send text messages out of country. They could not tell me one way or another. If you do not have your Panama cell phone listed on your account as of tomorrow you will not be able to log into your account. You may want to check it today. Whether it will work tomorrow is anyone’s guess. I have already posed this question to our warden, Hank Landis to see if he can get an answer. Here is what they sent: Starting in August 2016, Social Security is adding a new step to protect your privacy as a my Social Security user. This new requirement is the result of an executive order for federal agencies to provide more secure authentication for their online services. Any agency that provides online access to a customer’s personal information must use multifactor authentication. When you sign in at ssa.gov/myaccount with your username and password, we will ask you to add your text-enabled cell phone number. The purpose of providing your cell phone number is that, each time you log in to your account with your username and password, we will send you a one-time security code you must also enter to log in successfully to your account. Each time you sign into your account, you will complete two steps: Step 1: Enter your username and password. Step 2: Enter the security code we text to your cell phone (cell phone provider's text message and data rates may apply). The process of using a one-time security code in addition to a username and password is one form of “multifactor authentication,” which means we are using more than one method to make sure you are the actual owner of your account.
  6. Based on a recommendation from a friend we decided to try Airbox Express for shipping some larger packages from the US. We were initially impressed by a nice, older lady who went over all the the charging structure with us, emphasizing there are no hidden fees. We have now received and paid for two packages and have decided to go elsewhere. This is our experience. First box was over $80 at 5 pounds. Asked about additional fees. Was told there is a fee to get it to PC and then a separate fee to get it to Boquete. This was not presented initially to us. Second box, many delays. We were told that the box was being held up in customs because we didn't have an invoice on the outside of the box. This has never been an issue with other mail providers in town. In talking with the young girl at the shop she told us not to worry about it, the box was on its way. Three days later we get another email telling us that we needed to produce the invoice or the box would be returned. We went back in and was now told by the same girl that yes, we needed to produce an invoice, and now we were being charged custom fees for holding the box awaiting the invoice. I gave her a copy of the invoice and she said she would handle it. We finally got the box after a two week delay with this issue and was charged $108. This included a $30 customs fee. In attempting to get more information from our young clerk I get 'smart ass' one line comments that are not helpful in answering my question. She seemed more interested in watching the TV on the wall than helping me. We consider ourselves very tolerant people that have adapted to the Panama culture, but our experience at Airbox express goes way beyond, "It's just Panama". We are back to our previous provider where the service is much better and, after this experience, the prices are not that bad.
  7. Working WITH Change in Our Life -- 2 DAY SEMINAR August 2nd and 4th at the Haven Spa Change is constant, but we often resist it, making judgments as to whether we think change is good or bad. By understanding how to work with change, all of the challenges we face can be accepted and worked with in a meaningful and positive way. This two-day seminar will help you understand the process for positive change and give you specific tools that help you to recognize, accept and work with all of the changes you face in life. The seminar will include a detailed workbook from which essential information will be provided. There will also be frequent experiential and break-out sessions where participants can practice and share the key points of adapting positively to change. 9. For new and old residents of Panama, moving to an unfamiliar country and culture can trigger fear, stress and anxiety. Sometimes the stress and anxiety we experience become overwhelming, threatening to turn a move to Paradise into a move to Chaos. These new life experiences can also create conflict between loved ones. Our natural urge is to fear and resist some of the changes going on in our lives. There is a process to change that, when understood and handled consciously, can turn the fear, stress and resistance into positive and constructive channels. The result is to move more easily through change with positive outcomes. Relationships become aligned, mental clarity is achieved, better choices are made, and good mental, emotional and physical health are achieved. Change is a fact of life. What we can control is how we manage change. I am pleased to serve the Boquete community, focusing on change management. With over 20 years of coaching in change management, I bring the skills and expertise needed to assist you. I also have a new book out, Awakening in Change, available on Amazon. I have office hours available through The Haven on Tuesday afternoons and Thursday and Saturday mornings. For more information on how Change Management Coaching can help improve your life and relationships please contact me, Merl Will-Wallace at 6534-5008 or go to www.counselingfortransition.com. You can also schedule an appointment through The Haven at 730-9345. My services are conducted in the strictest of confidences.
