A friend sent me this article today about the trials and tribulations of expatriation. I thought perhaps we all could benefit from reading it.

Great article.  And buried in the article is reason for the outrage against the newning direction, a useful method for goers, stayers, and newbies to interact with each other before actually getting involved with each other. Most first encounters between the 3 groups took place on oldning where Lee allowed everyone the chance to be their own self.

  2. While reviewing the oft repeated, but false claim that Lee banned more members than Ambreen, I re-read this post from Lee which I believe has the clue to running a forum.  And yes, Ambreen, free speech is indeed a key to that.

Panama does not have a free press. in fact it is less free now than in the past. According to Reporters without Borders, Panama ranks 81 out of 178 nations, way below Costa Rica at 29, bracketed between Albania and Zambia, just a bit above Nicaragua at 83.

This website is hosted in the US, number 20 on the same list and I am a US citizen. Still I and many others who contribute to this website live in Panama and we are subject to the laws of Panama, all of them.

Twice,  I have threatened with slander or more correctly libel suits using Panama's rather draconian laws. Once for exposing Computer Protective Services and Fredrick Allen Osburn and  more recently for expressing my opinion about a Tuesday Morning Meeting topic.

Threats inhibit free speech. Threats discourage people from interacting or expressing their opinions. The goal of this website is a free exchange of information which includes opinions; mine and yours.

I cannot prevent anyone from filing a lawsuit, but I will ban and delete all content from anyone who, in the future uses this forum to make a threat, legal or not,  against any user on this website.

The past is the past and cannot be altered but the future will lack threats here.  If you think you are libeled, hire a lawyer, but don't threaten people on this website.

Boquete.ning is now a lost cause.  I do not believe the forum was ever high on the list of the websites that JLM Foundation bought.  I guessed that the new ning might last until Independence Day but certainly they can not make it to Christmas on their present course of conduct.

    Adios Boquete.ning, bien venidos Chiriqui.Life.

As we say in Panama.  " We don't like the gossips.... but how them entertain us."

Ambreen, Bob Hunter, Birdie of Paradise, David Silverman visit CL regularly and post what they think is a bunch of people conspiring against BN.  They claim that their membership is increasing everyday and mpeople that never posted before because they were afraid of been attacked by the subversive people that now are part of CL send them hundred letters praising them for the changes of cutting down the evil people out of the site.

So I enjoy seeing how this is developing at BN.

This is true, Sr. Roger.  Ambreen claims 325 new members but a very easy count of BN membership shows 234 members since JLM Foundation joined on Sept 8th when BN changed ownership.  Her math skills are not much better than her social skills.

Woody, have you something against someone having their own personal opinion?  I am simply tired of Panamanians being taken advantage of for their kind nature. That's what you refer to as drivel?

There was a congratulation for planet telecom for discontinuing their sponsorship of ning's bad practices.  A discussion about having ethical values was part of that talk.  Continuing to sponsor ning was seen as a bad light.

On nearly a daily basis, sometimes more often, the same small group of people (you can count them on one hand) feel obligated to defend the new .ning owners/moderators on that site.

Previous to the new owners taking over, these folks had pretty much never posted on or made their presence known. One person, who claims to have been a friend of Lee Zeltzer's even goes so far as to make statements that are basically exactly the same as the moderators have made in defending their actions. There's something wrong with this picture....

Has anyone been interviewed for the position of ambassador to ningdom?  From Bob's message on ning.

We understand the importance of having a 'boots on the ground" representative for our site, one who understands the needs of those residing or vacationing in the surrounding areas. We are interviewing and very close to announcing this Ning ambassador so to speak.  We only hope the critique's will be minimal, there is no reason for any meanness.  ,

  6. I just watched a fascinating documentary about Dean Kamen's water project that had a appearance from Bill Clinton in it.  For all his faults, the past president does seem to care about what happens to the planet and its people.  If Americans were smart, they would elect Dean Kamen for President.

    The film is here --

  7. The problem with having a forum comprised largely of newcomers is that they are still in the "honeymoon phase" of living abroad. Without the injection of some history and reality by the veterans, many discussions become meaningless and misleading.

I like the honeymoon reference.  Many times when I was assigned overseas, the team I was in would discuss 3 phases of deployment: honeymoon, the slog in the middle, and the euphoria of preparing for repatriation. When relocating from one's home country, the realization that the slog is permanent is too much for many people.

As with most relationships, it is tough to keep the honeymoon alive.

  8. There is some good value recorded on the old Ning that would be good to be included on Chiriqui.Life.  The discussions that people talked about all the reasons for moving to Panama (or from where they were) were some of the best.

The current discussions on newning are mostly between Canadians talking about stuff that isn't Panama related.

So, what are the best and worst things about living in Panama, keeping in mind that best/worst in Bugaba and David may be different.

  9. Brundageba,

Sorry to hear that... not surprised!

Thanks, this is a more sane club!

I have used this lady for t shirts and hats, fast and reliable, here in Boquete:

    Franagian and Novice:

Can we use your logos you posted?

    Cheers!

The suspended notice from ning would probably be a better iron-on transfer.  Those can be done by anyone with a printer and an iron (NOT iRon, that's an Apple product).  The artwork would be great as an embroidery project but it must be converted to a punch format for machine embroidery.

Adding a reference to Chiriqui.Life as the replacement would be a nice touch to the artwork, I think.
