AUGUST 2023 NEWSLETTER
JULY CLINIC
On Sunday July 30th, Amigos de Animales spayed or neutered 267 animals, 130 dogs and 137 cats with five vets and one trainee working.
67% of the animals were female and 42% came from Boquete. 195 animals were brought in by owners and 72 came from collectors.
GUARUMAL MINI-CLINIC
On Sunday August 13th we took our van and about 25 volunteers to the town of Guarumal. We had 2 vets who spayed or neutered 91 animals - 68 dogs and 23 cats.
Thanks to Cynthia Dunne and Lisbeny Morales for organizing this clinic. They raised donations in order to make it an almost free clinic for owners. They also brought in volunteers to help, and provided food for the volunteers. It was a great day!
EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH PROGRAM
Last week we announced our Amigos de Animales Educational Program. Thank you to all of the donors and volunteers who have stepped up!
We are working to enhance the students’ educational experience by providing classes on pet care, animal maintenance, and sterilization. We will also expand their access to reading books, read aloud to the students and by setting up school animal sterilization clinics at the schools, near the students’ homes.
We have 2 main needs:
Volunteers: we'd like to have 1 to 4 volunteers for each school so we can nurture and grow the experience for the children throughout the school year. There are many ways you can help, and Spanish skills are not needed.
Please attend an introductory meeting to learn more about volunteering this Saturday August 27th at 11 AM at the Amigos de Animales building.
Financial: we are actively fundraising to be able to buy books and supplies for the Animales presentations, create bookcases and reading corners in classrooms, and to fund the Amigos de Animales school sterilization clinics.
There is no better exercise for your heart and soul than reaching out and helping to lift a child. Please click one or both buttons:

How long have you been working with AdA and what do you do? I have been volunteering since 2018. I
started in cat and dog recovery. About 2.5 years ago, Ms. Jane asked me if I could help with serving food in the kitchen, as I am bilingual…so that is what I do now.
Why would you encourage others to volunteer here with AdA? I would encourage others to volunteer their time with Amigos De Animales to help lessen the suffering of animals who don’t have safe and loving homes. Also, it’s a great way to meet people from not only the Chiriqui Province, but from all over the world.

• Food Drive: We are continuing to feed needy dogs and cats in Boquete at a cost of over $1,600 per month. You can donate by clicking here
• Membership Drive: Sign up for your annual Amigos de Animales membership and receive a great car magnet. Membership is still only $10. You can sign up at the BCP Tuesday Market or at a clinic.
• Gift certificates: We have made gift certificates in the denomination of $10 and $20, the price of an individual sterilization for a cat or a dog. Give your neighbors, gardeners and maids certificates for their dogs and cats. Let’s help each other help each other!
These certificates are an easy way to help. They are available at the Animales table at the BCP Tuesday Market, at Mike's Global Grill or at the clinics• 2024 Calendar: We've sold out of the 2023 calendars, and all of our ads for our 2024 calendar. Thank you to Larry & Jennifer Pascal for another great job!

• Rescue/adoption?: The mission of Amigos de Animales is strictly spay and neuter, we are not a rescue, adoption or veterinary service. Please do not ask Rosa about any other service - there are many other rescue groups in and around Boquete.

Dear Members and Friends of BCP –
I am very proud of the shows we are preparing for you in this year’s Theater Season – FIVE unique productions all in September and October in the beautiful Tent Theater at the Rock Restaurant.
It has long been our dream to have greater participation with the Panamanian community, and I am delighted to say that this year ALL of our shows feature Panamanian performers.
Firstly, Divorciadas, Evangelicas Y Vegetarianas – by Gustavo Ott, directed by Caesar Augustus Romanum. Written and performed in Spanish, the dialog has been “Spanglish-ized” so that even very beginner Spanish speakers will enjoy this outrageous comedy.
Next we present Motown Generations , written and directed by Rhonda Johnson, with choreography by Rhonda and guest choreographers. The music of old and new Motown will have you singing and dancing in the aisles along with the 28 exuberant performers onstage.
The Tin Woman, written by Sean Grennan and directed by yours truly, introduces us to Joy, who like the Tin Woodsman in the Wizard of Oz, needs a heart. A touching story of humor, pathos and human frailty that reaches beyond the grave.
For our music fans we are bringing back the Blues Extravaganza, this year featuring guest guitarist Eugene Grey, as well as your favorite musicians from Boquete.
And finally, the immensely popular Little Shop of Horrors, by composers Howard Ashman and Alan Menkin, and directed by Christopher Minori with musical direction by Michael Halpern. Lives are changed when a strange new plant arrives in a Skid Row flower shop… with delicious consequences.

Hello,
Amigos de Animales has been going to local schools for years. We've now created an Educational Outreach program that we'd like to introduce.
Who we are: We are a team of volunteers dedicated to improving the circumstances of the children and pets around rural Boquete. Many of us have educational backgrounds, some have technical knowledge, others have catering skills, some provide transport. No one receives a stipend or expenses.
Our mission: To enhance the students’ educational experience by providing classes on pet care, animal maintenance, and sterilization. We will also expand their access to attractive reading books, by modeling reading and teaching methods for the teachers, and by setting up school animal sterilization clinics at the schools, near the students’ homes.To date in 2023, we have been able to support 44 classrooms with bookcases, rugs and books, going into the school when the teacher sends us a picture of the reading corner ready to be furnished. The Ministry of Education asks the teachers to create reading corners, however, the classrooms have very few story books.
We are inspiring their reading by providing colorful story books from Scholastic, Barnes and Noble, local authors, and other sources. We also motivate the students to learn by singing songs, reading aloud to them, encouraging them to read in their spare time at home and school.
The School Directors, Teachers and students in all of the rural Boquete schools are very excited about this program. There are many more schools and classrooms that need to be set up and animal care programs to be presented. We need your help!Our plan for moving ahead:
• Actively fundraising to be able to buy books, reading materials, supplies for the Animales presentations, and to fund the Amigos de Animales school sterilization clinics.
• Build a base of volunteers so that four people can be attached to each school or school area to follow through on the program.
• Visit every school in the district annually to give a two day presentation on pet care and the importance of sterilization.
• Undertake a mini clinic within reach of each school once every year to ensure that the students' cats and dogs and those of the community are sterilized.
• Support the classroom reading corner with bookcases, rugs and books. Follow up by replacing damaged books and rotating titles.
• Visiting the schools in each district on a regular basis to nurture and grow the Amigos de Animales Educational program.
• Enhance the students literacy and educational experience.
It is so rewarding and fun to be with these students.
We need your help! This year we want to set up book corners in 20 more classrooms and to do 2 more school sterilization clinics. Also, we need volunteers in a number of areas (no Spanish required).

Happy New Year, everyone!
The Boquete Health and Hospice organization is planning an exciting 2023. We are happy to announce that we resumed in-person Being Prepared workshops and New Volunteer training this month. So many people were interested in the workshop that we expanded to three sessions and eight new volunteers attended training. We will continue to expand volunteer teams throughout the year. We are cautiously getting our Hospice team back out to do home visits.
We are planning a Basic First Aid class and a CPR class in the coming months, and looking forward to fundraising events later in the year that will be fun-filled with food, music, and games.
A master computer designer is working on perfecting our operations database and we are planning for much growth in our community outreach programs, headed by Lesley Hughes, VP, Community Relations. Lesley is also working with our marketing and social media teams to increase awareness and educate the community on the services and quality education that BHH offers.
We invite everyone to join us as a volunteer to strengthen our lives and our community.

2023 Officers and Initiatives
On January 11, 2023, the membership of Boquete Hospice and Health Foundation met (in-person and via Zoom) and elected the following people to the governing council:- President – Open

The budget for 2023, which has been approved by the Council, was presented:- Income of $21,100
- Expenses of $26,872
The initiatives for 2023 were also presented. The general thrust for the year will be on a gradual resumption of our pre-pandemic activities: in-home visits, in-person meetings, and more community workshops and education, while continuing those activities Boquete Health and Hospice has done all along.

Being Prepared Workshop Delivered to "Sold Out" CrowdSo many people wanted to attend Being Prepared for End of Life In Boquete Workshop this month, that three sessions were scheduled with 52 people signing up! The workshops were delivered by Kelly Honyak and Dave Nichols, who did an outstanding job.
The participants are now much better prepared to control the legacy of what they leave behind to friends and family and comply with Panamanian law while doing so.
Thanks to everyone who assisted in making the workshops a success, including Sandra Cripe, Kat McCay, Lesley Hughes, Cat Vann, and Herta Bernbach. And a big thank you to the Retire in Panamá team, who asked us to participate in their Q&A show and marketed the workshop and the manual to their followers, which drew a lot of attention to the workshop.
We received $670 in donations through the Being Prepared program including two generous donations of $500 and $100 to the general fund.
If you weren't able to attend, you can still purchase the Being Prepared manual at Mail Boxes Etc. or at the BHH table at the Tuesday Market for a donation of $10. The hard copy is available in English or Spanish. A PDF version will be available in the future through a minimal donation of $5 on the BHH website. Once that's possible, we'll announce it in this newsletter.

Eight enthusiastic students participated in the January New Volunteer Training class. During the three information-packed days of class, students not only learned about the services that Boquete Health and Hospice provides, but also participated in hands-on training in the use of crutches, walkers, wheelchairs, and other mobility equipment.
Each team from BHH was represented by speaker(s) who discussed in detail how they provide valuable services to the local community. From music programs to translation services, the Being Prepared workshop, the newsletter, and social media, students were able to ask questions of our BHH experts.
It is often thought that a medical background is required to become a member or volunteer with BHH. That is not true. Our volunteers are from various professional backgrounds and contribute to BHH in many different capacities.
We welcome our new volunteers and look forward to working with them to serve our community.
The class began with an introduction to our Patient Care Coordinators Bev Tyler, Craig Gatrel, and Denise Daniels. 
John Ferguson demonstrated how to set up and use an oxygen concentrator. 
Natalie Kelly taught the class about the BHH newsletter and public relations efforts. 
Kat and Larry Clayton shared their experience in navigating the local medical system during an emergency situation. 
Students created puzzles representing the pieces that make up our complex organization. 
With the help of a four-legged visitor, Chuck High and Lesley Hughes demonstrated the proper use of crutches. 
Dr. Rod Gottula addressed the class about death/grief and the signs of dying. 
Sandra Cripe provided an overview of the Being Prepared workshop. 
Art Blevins introduced the BHH music program to the class.

Walkers Benefit Handicap Foundation
We donated two of our walkers to the Handicap Foundation (Foundation Pro Integración) at the end of December. Sally Zigmond delivered the walkers to Migdalia Rios and Loesje Sherwood (pictured left), who run the retail store of the foundation.

Retire In Panamá Team!
Over the past few months Rod Larrivee and Oscar Peña have been instrumental in helping promote BHH.On November 7, 2022, BHH was invited to speak during a Retire In Panamá´s webinar regarding BHH’s services, healthcare, and hospice care in Boquete.
The response was overwhelming and following the workshop, Rod and Oscar continued to help BHH by promoting our Being Prepared for End of Life in Boquete workshop and manual. As a result of their help, BHH had a record number of sales for the manual and the first workshop immediately sold out. Two additional workshops were added to accommodate the demand.
BHH also received a wonderful surprise from Retire In Panamá in December. Retire In Panamá hosted its first holiday bash and proceeds from the raffle were donated to BHH! These funds are greatly appreciated and will be used towards the purchase and repair of the medical equipment that BHH loans to patients.
Partnering with Retire In Panamá is a unique and very rewarding experience which benefits both organizations. BHH looks forward to a continued friendship with Oscar, Rod, and everyone at Retire In Panamá!

Music can be cathartic when we listen together, as is evident when we attend concerts, symphonies, or any of the innumerable venues around the world where people gather to enjoy music together. BHH is happy to offer education videos on our website. They provide excellent info for caregivers and the general public in Spanish and English. Topics cover using equipment including crutches, wheelchairs, and walkers, as well as moving patients safely for patient and caregiver and general patient care. All requests related to equipment must go through the PCCs. The PCCs will work with you or the caregiver to determine the appropriate equipment, availability, and loan period. Once the equipment need is identified, the PCCs coordinate with the equipment team to ensure the correct equipment is sanitized and ready to be checked out (picked up) at our locker located at Alto Dorado. A member of the equipment team will contact you or the caregiver directly to make arrangements to meet at our locker.
Please note that our equipment team members only go to the locker for scheduled equipment checkouts and returns. No equipment team member is staffed at the locker and the locker is only open during specific times. Therefore, it is important to contact the PCCs first. When you are ready to return equipment, the process is the same. Simply call the PCCs at 6781-9250.

PARTY BUS - February 3 (Friday) to February 6 (Monday), 2023 (2 amazing tours in one trip!)
A.) Panama Canal “Partial” Transit - a once in a lifetime adventure
B.) Visit the Biomuseo, designed by the renowned architect Frank Gehry.
We will be staying at the Radisson Hotel Panama Canal conveniently located in the entrance of the Amador Causeway. There are Many wonderful restaurants on the Amador Causeway. There is also an amazing sidewalk that starts at this hotel and goes all the way to the end of the Causeway.
The Amador Causeway was built with material taken out to build the Panama Canal..so it is a man made road that has wáter on both sides. From one side you see the entrance of the Panama Canal for the ships going Northbound (which is what we will do), and from the other side you have the most amazing view of the skyline of Panama City.
The best way to experience the Panama Canal is in a cruise onboard the Pacific Queen. You will have the opportunity to appreciate the canal up close and to transit through the locks alongside the big ships. See the tugboats in operation and the Panama Canal expansion new set of locks!
The Pacific Queen was designed specifically for day tours and cruises. It is a Norwegian built cruiser with a capacity for 250 passengers with 119 ft. in LOA and 25 ft. in Beam. Passengers will enjoy its two spacious, enclosed decks, fully equipped with air conditioning and a comfortable seating arrangement. In addition, an open-air third deck serves as an ideal vantage point from which to enjoy your cruise and relax in a tropical setting. The vessel’s bow can accommodate additional passengers, and enjoys an open-air setting.
Onboard the Pacific Queen we operate a souvenir shop, complete with local handcrafts, Panama Canal souvenirs and more. In the first floor, you will find a lounge area with bar where food and drinks are served.
The Pacific Queen has a speaker system for tour guide narration of the cruises. The Pacific Queen has six conveniently located restrooms to ensure a comfortable trip.
The itinerary is:
A.) February 3, 2023 (Friday) – Leave Boquete 7:30AM. Traveling by a comfortable private tour bus to Panama City. We begin our trip with a pre-boarding continental breakfast at 7:00AM and we serve you mimosas, wine (red or white), sangria, water, all the way. We will stop along the way for short breaks. We will also have snacks for you as we travel. Lunch at “Va & Ven” in Anton (lunch is on your own). We arrive at Radisson Panama Canal Hotel in Amador around 4PM. That evening dinner will be on your own. Check out the many different restaurants on the Amador Causeway. (The hotel can provide taxi services to wherever you want to go when you are not on a tour with us. You can arrange that at the front desk.)
B.) February 4, 2023 (Saturday) – That morning we leave the hotel early because the “Partial transit” starts around 7AM. It is a 5 to 6 hour tour total. The drive from our hotel to the Flamenco Marina (where we board the boat), is about a 15 minute ride.
***They will confirm the time the partial transit leaves the day before. Since they have to get permission from the ACP to transit the canal, they do not have that information yet.
Departing from the Flamenco Marina (on the Amador Causeway) the boat enters the Canal, goes in front of our hotel (Radisson Panama Canal Hotel), passes underneath the Bridge of the Americas, transits through the Miraflores AND Pedro Miguel Locks, passes underneath the Centennial Bridge, the boat enters into the Gaillard Cut until we get to Gamboa (where we will get off the boat). From Gamboa they provide a bus that will take us back to the Flamenco Marina.
Upon our return from Gamboa our bus will be waiting for us at Flamenco Marina to take us back to our hotel.
****Onboard Amenities: Bilingual Narrator/Guide, Buffet Lunch (complete Panamanian lunch), Unlimited Sodas and Water, Coffee Station
****Things to bring: Sun Protection, hats, cameras, money as they have a gift shop on the boat, and a bar where they sell alcoholic drinks (that is on you).
C.) February 5, 2023 (Sunday) – Delicious breakfast at “Radisson Panama Canal Hotel”(included).
At 10:45am we leave the hotel, and will visit the “Biomuseo” located on the Amador Causeway in Panama City (they open at 11AM).
The Biomuseo was designed to tell the story of how the Istmus of Panama rose from the sea, uniting two continents, separating a vast ocean in two, and changing the planet`s biodiversity forever.
Duration at the Biomuseo about 2 hours. At 1pm our bus will pick us up at the Biomuseo, and take us back to our hotel.
***Whoever wants to go to the Amador Causeway or anywhere else for lunch, please coordinate this transportation with the hotel lobby.
D.) February 6, 2023 (Monday) – Delicious breakfast at “Radisson Panama Canal Hotel”(included).
At 8:30AM we leave Radisson Panama Canal Hotel and start our trip back to Boquete.
We will stop for lunch at Va & Ven in Santiago (on your own).
We expect to return to Boquete latest 7PM.
This entire package includes: The round trip ground transportation bus, Continental breakfast before you get on the bus, 3 nights stay at “Radisson Panama Canal Hotel” (Amador) with buffet breakfast included, guided English speaking guide for the Saturday Panama Canal Partial transit (lunch IS included on this tour), AND all you can drink of mimosas, wine (red or white), sangria, water, and snacks on the bus for the whole trip.
Space is limited to 30 persons. It will be on a first come, first serve bases.
Total package: $475.00 per person (2 persons in 1 room)……..$575.00 for single occupancy

Family of the Month – Rigoberto’s Family
For many years Rigoberto and his family lived up in the Comarca (indigenous
reservation) but it was difficult to find enough work to feed his large family. So he
packed up their few belongings and brought them all down the mountain to live with
his sister and her family on the land whose owner allowed them to stay there in
exchange for maintaining it. Rigoberto has a large family that includes his wife
Liliana, his three daughters, Itzl 8, Darlin 6. Kelysneth 5, his two sons Royber 3,
Roderick 1 and his mother-in-law. They constructed another zinc and bamboo house
on the property and bought chickens and seed corn to help feed both families.
There is no electricity, but they have been able to tap into a water line. During the
rainy season the nearby creek serves as a washing machine for both moms and a
swimming hole for all the kids.
It turned out to be a bad time to find a job in this area. The first hit was, of course,
Covid. What resulted were the consequences of shut downs, new energy policies ,
and then the inability to buy or afford vegetable seeds and fertilizer. Many
agricultural and food-processing plants in the area again laid off workers and now
the job market was flooded with these laborers. Still Rigoberto looks for work every
day and plants corn and root vegetables for his family’s cook pot. He sets up a
treadle-driven sewing machine out under a tree so that Grandma can sew native
dresses to sell in the village.
But kids are kids, and poverty is neither new nor stressful for them. There is school in
the rainy season, games to play outside in the sunshine during dry season, dogs and
chickens to chase, and always one another for companionship. Plus, every morning
and every evening they gather around the cook-stove to each get their bowl of rice
and beans.
Thankfully, their situation and their daily diets have improved. It only took a couple
of weeks before nearby Buenos Vecinos volunteers discovered them and saw how
much assistance both families needed. They were soon accepted into the program
and now every month they receive canned fish and meat, powdered milk, pasta, oil,
cream cereals, flour, salt, (more) rice and beans and even a chocolate bar to share.
Each month there is also a new vegetable plant to add to their garden, thanks to the
BVB Food Start program. Life is looking a little brighter for these families and there
are plenty of smiles and happy waves “hello” whenever they see their BVB
volunteers.

A person with a pick-up to help BVB as a volunteer to transport one-hundred Food-Start jugs from a farm in Palmira to the Handicap Center (across from Chop Sticks Chinese Restaurant) the last Thursday of each month. Contact us at buenosvecinos79@gmail.com
Global Food Providers (GFP) Feeds the Poor
In preparation for what will be challenging times in the food supply, GFP is teaching people in Panama and throughout the world how to acquire and preserve food. Buenos Vecinos is learning how to translate this knowledge to better nourish our clients. GFP has provided Super Foods, nutrient-dense
dehydrated greens, to a few of our families in an initial test program this last year. Three times a week our moms have added a tablespoon of this powderized food to their families’ rice pot or soup kettle.
The results have been encouraging. Kids and adults have reported that they sleep better at night, are more focused at school or work, and have more energy and a more positive attitude throughout the day. BVB will soon be ready to take our program to the next level to include more of our families.

Buenos Vecinos de Boquete exists to help people, who are unable to meet their basic food needs. We have provided emergency food support on many occasions and have been successful in helping families through hard times. We will help them with food support until the working age adults in the family can find enough income to become self-sustaining.

Greetings to the Boquete Community from Milky Way Creamery!
Many of you already know us from the Tuesday markets where we have offered our goat dairy products for over 9 years. For those of you whom we haven’t yet had the pleasure of meeting, Milky Way is a farmstead goat dairy and creamery right here in Boquete. Although the goats are our main focus, we also have other animals, as well as some vegetables and ornamental plants.
Over the years, we’ve had fantastic results with our veggies and flowers by using a fertilizer that we've been producing ever since we started raising goats. Right now we’re offering it to the rest of the community.
Our organic fertilizer is made using a mixture of fully composted (black soil), partially composted, and raw goat, duck, chicken, and green manure. The result is a mixture that's teeming with beneficial microorganisms that can support the growth of your plants for 6+ months. You can grow directly on it, or you can use it as the perfect soil amendment for your raised bed and potting mixes.
The 50 lb. bag is $12.
Piero will be in the Plaza San Francisco Plaza in Alto Boquete on Monday, January 30th between 9:00-9:30 A.M., ready to load up your vehicle. He will be parked across the street on the south side of the plaza. Who We Are: We’re a group of women who meet to sing, dance, share stories, move, meditate and embrace the Universal connection to our feminine energy. We are Panamanian, ExPats from various countries, Indigenous and other. We are inclusive and self-supporting.
Who Benefits? We do! Being in community is healthy for all human beings. Women often feel uncomfortable around other women. We create a safe space for women to be themselves, to have Fun.
Who Else Benefits? Proceeds from our circles will go to helping the Women of the Comarca to create their own financial freedom.
When: Moon Sisters will meet once a month on the Full Moon night, or the night closest to it that makes sense. Our intention is to support one another, create connection and conversation between groups of women who might not otherwise know each other and to take our place as women in a community of women who can be present and enjoy the gifts of our innate feminine wisdom.
