  1. This is a huge issue here in Panama.  Mines are not yet dead.  It never goes well for those living adjacent.  Here, it involves the indigenous with a small voice.  In fact until the issue of the mine up in the central cordillera, the Ngobe had almost zero voice.  Out of that struggle to oust mining there came the very existence of the COMARCA .  Finally out of the struggle came land for them...ON TOP.  Under that land I do believe the government still has claim.  I recommend the book:

Conditions Not of Their Choosing by Chris Gjording published by the Smithsonian Inst. Pub.1991.

If you live in the Republic of Panama you will find this book quite informative. The retired American population living in Panama generally know very little about the plight of the native indigenous Ngobe Bugle of Panama. This book is the story of their battle for autonomy and some protection vs the invasion of international mining companies specifically in the central provinces.

It is still available on Amazon for $18.00   Excellent ref book if you plan to sink your anchor here in Boquete for a time !  The book gives a neat insider view of what it's like to be Ngobe and a tender appreciation for their struggle, on going.

  2. All doctors will at one time or another make mistakes...same with nurses.  That is exactly why every patient needs to come into the office well prepared and then leave and get a second opinion.   You need to be watchful when the hospital nurse hands you your medicines and know what each one is for along with side effects.  This should not involve rocket science.

  3. I strongly suggest this talk be video recorded.   I also strongly recommend RodnyDirect to all new residents who are not proficient in Spanish.  That service is essentially a bilingual 911 and is worth every dime !!!

  5.  Starting November 24, the Supreme  Court will declare itself in permanent session to debate the decision of the unconstitutionality claims of Law 406 of October 20, 2023. Previously, in December 2017 and June 2021, the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court of Justice decided unanimously, on both occasions, that Law 9 of 1997, a direct predecessor of Law 406, was unconstitutional.

    MY QUESTION:
If in 1997 law 9 (which was a predecessor to Law 406  ) was voted UNCONSTITUTIONAL, why would there be any doubt that a contract renewal ( Law 406 ) would be met with resistance ?   I am not understanding this apparent lack of awareness of public opinion on behalf of the President.

  7. The story attracts attention and the production of the movie can win award money.  I seriously doubt any new answers will come on the death of these two girls.  One thing I can say is, the jungle of Panama is raw and full of danger .  Obviously theft was not a factor or phones and money would not be left.  Wild beasts roam in the wilds here, and as well in your back yards.  On the very edge of touristy Boquete is dangerous territory that hikers should be aware of.  Alone, it is easy to get lost or encounter wild beasts such as Fer de Lance. The movie will bring this to light I'm sure.  Traveling alone on these trails can be very dangerous. Watch where you step.  Have a trusted guide with you.  This Fer de Lance was in clear view in my back yard.  We ate it.

If the article is scrutinized you'll see the literary "twist".  The medical powers that be reporting to the local Panama  press are defining VACCINATED as having taken the full series which now apparently is 4 shots by their definition.   My personal definition of vaccinated is that it is SAFE and EFFECTIVE.  It does not appear to be effective and "safe" is still being studied.

  9. Here is a fine example of boots on the ground work expats contribute for the enrichment of the children of Panama !  ( education, food, water...long list )  I have known Ruth and her husband Sam for many years.,  Both of them are the real deal !   This book is only a small piece of the heart they have for this country and their own  sweat equity invested to improve the quality of life of the poor here.  I am in absolute awe of them..... Hats off ~!

2011 Panama reportedly spent 100 million dollars on two incinerators and one portable.  Possibly that purchase did not go through?  I don't know.  It does seem curious to save 42 tons of  cocaine.  Over 80,000 pounds of pure cocaine !!.  Ponder that for a moment.  When did the USA get in the business of importing huge quantities of hard narcotic for incineration?

  11. When I listened to the explanation of this AIG information gathering when it was discussed at the dialogue table I understood it better.  For one there is an estimation of use by sector: private, agriculture, transport.  That assists the govt in evaluating use  for further assessments.  Avoiding misuse is another factor: cars filling up coming from Costa Rica , fueling passing drug boats enroute .   The gas attendant is the collector of data.  You are not required to enter the system yourself.  That got nipped early.  Govt had a big pushback on that.....  I could be wrong but that's my take right now.....

Government asked that if you don't need the discount....don't take it.   I wonder how many will NOT?.
