Dr. Harminio Carrizo

Rest in peace good Doctor. We attended a small service for him yesterday. All five of his daughters were here. Four of them live in the USA. Very beautiful family.

On Volunteering in Boquete

Volunteers in Boquete I remember as a young child (first or second grade), I got into a fight with a friend. As my mom held and comforted me, she gave me a good piece of advice for life: "You know, honey, if you want your friends to be nice to you, you have to be nice to your friends." Several months ago, I volunteered for a project with an organization, was told repeatedly that I was doing a wonderful job, and then I was fired. Abruptly. No warning. No explanation. No thank you for th

A Blog Which Asks for Help with my Blog

I started writing blogs for Chiriqui.life after another creative outlet in my life was abruptly closed to me. Bud and Marcelyn had started "a free online community information forum for the exchange of ideas, the posing of questions, and the sharing of local information." What the hell, I thought, I've written on and off throughout my life, most recently for the Bajareque Times. I could start a blog. Share my wealth of knowledge (heeheeheehee). It has been a pretty good fit for me. Bud an

We went today, Sunday, around noon. Not many people there at all. That's why we went at noon. We bought a few things. I got a belt and she bought a purse. I love the beautifull live stock show. They grow some fine animals in Chiriqui. Lot of condo sales, gated community sales, and property sales inside the cool buildings. I was more interested in history and the live stock than anything else. And, there was a shooting in the fair last night. I went at night last year and I'm convinced we are a m

Cubanos At Paso Canoas

The cubanos that left out on a plane to Mexico have been replaced with new ones coming from Ecuador and Columbia. My understanding is there are a few hundred more in Paso Canoas now. I was at the Frontera last weekend and the warehouse before the InterAmericana Hwy Check Point was empty and now it is full. Also, the highway check point was checking ever vehicle and documents in both directions. The traffic line through the check point took me 30 minutes. It is full of cubanos today, Saturday, Ma

Colibri Restaurant, Something for Every Palate

Colibri Restaurant, Something for Every Palate   I have a confession. I don't invite vegan friends over for dinner. They're nice, friendly folks, but what the heck do I feed them? It's intimidating. I'm not what you would call an inspired cook to begin with and all I feel safe feeding a vegan is veggies, beans, and quinoa. That's boring. I've looked in the vegan section of a cookbook but I don't even know what seitan makhani or aloo matar

Netflix by country

I have received several questions regarding Netflix blocking users that use a VPN to access content.   If you are a VPN user and cannot get to Netflix, I would recommend the service called "Unlocator".   It uses a different method of accessing the blocked content and as of this writing, Unlocator users users are still able to access the Netflix content they want.   You can get more information about Unlocator service at their website http://www.unlocator.com.   They offer a 7 day free trial and

Is Boquete the Best? A Look at our Quality of LIfe

Is Boquete the Best? A Look at our Quality of Life   When we decided to move out of the US, we visited Boquete, Panama first and decided to stay. Our instincts were right. We've been very happy here. Of course there have been glitches, but everywhere you go has glitches. The key is finding someplace to live where the benefits far outweigh the glitches. It's all very personal. One man's ceiling is another man's flo

Panamanian Mail

I have used the David post office many times for packages going to the USA. Nothing has gotten lost so far. In David, you are required to wrap the package onsite for inspection purposes, use brown paper, and glue. No string or tape allowed. Also, in David you have to put a copy of your passport in the package. My last package with three pair of sandals got to Florida in less than 21 days. If you need info about Boquete I suggest visiting the post office. I would assume the rules are the same. Le

Ransomware and Backups

I have received several questions regarding the recent news story about Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in L.A. whose computers were infected with "ransomware".   For those unaware of the news story, here is a link to it.   http://www.reuters.com/article/us-california-hospital-cyberattack-idUSKCN0VS05M Ransomware is malware (malicious software) that infects a computer and encrypts all of the user's files making them unusable until they are decrypted with a unique key.
